Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
