Computer-created graphics claiming to portray Venezuela's president detained following his capture by the US have garnered tens of millions of views online.
The Way Fake Pictures of the President Surfaced Within Hours
Initial fabricated AI image apparently displaying him led off a plane emerged within hours. The picture was not shared any verified US channels; it was instead published on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved the SynthID tool, determining the image was created or altered with AI tools.
Additional AI-generated images started circulating in the following hours, seemingly depicting additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these images indicate they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
The detection tool confirms these additional images were similarly produced using AI technology.
Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Continued
The former US president released the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was released, synthetic images kept circulating but were updated to incorporate the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation show the new fake images were first posted on TikTok by a graphic design account. Similarly, analysis found these further images were generated or edited Google AI.
