Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is developed, including a significant range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
