2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming looks especially powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.

If these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
